The Efficacy of Bacteriokiller(BK) Disinfectant Against Clinical Isolates and in Handwashing

Abstract
We evaluated the efficacy of Bacteriokiller(BK) disinfectant; a new handwashing product that shows steriliging effect by the action of active oxygen and hypochlorite, against clinical isolates and kn handwashing.
Clinical isolates were 3 strains of coagulase-negative staphylococcus, Enterococcus faecalis, methicillin-resistant. Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, Acinelobacter baumannii, Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Serratia marcescens, and Xanthomonas maltophilia, and 1 strain of Candida albicans. The organisms diluted with Mueller-Hinton broth (10^(6) CFU/mL) were mixed with 20ppm BK disinfectant(1:4), and the colonies were counted after 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes, and 5 minutes. All isolates except 1 strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans were killed within 30 seconds. The two organisms were killed between 30 seconds and 1 minute.
After soaking their hands in Mueller-Hinton broth inoculated with methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus(106(6) CFU/mL), 20 medical personnel washed their hands with running BK disinfectant, or with tap water and soap. The mean colony count after handwashing with running BK disinfectant(21.0) was lower than that with tap water and soap(174.6). The BK disinfectant was effective in 15 out of 20 subjects(755).
It seems that the running BK disinfectant is effective in handwashing of medical personnel.
